Elizabeth Bennet is a young, independent woman living in 18th century England. She lives with her four sisters, who are all desperate to find wealthy husbands. Elizabeth, however, is not interested in marrying unless it is for love.

When a wealthy and handsome young bachelor named Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood, the Bennet family is excited at the prospect of one of the sisters catching his eye. Indeed, Mr. Bingley is taken with the eldest Bennet sister, Jane, but Elizabeth is not quite so impressed with his friend, Mr. Darcy.

Despite their initial dislike of each other, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy find themselves continually thrown into each other's company. Their interactions are marked by the sharp barbs they exchange, with each feeling as though the other is unspeakably proud and impossibly prejudiced.
