  • July 5, 2009

Miss Marple: A Pocket Full of Rye is the twenty-seventh and final episode of season 38 of Masterpiece. This episode is based on a classic Agatha Christie novel of the same name. The show follows the adventures of the beloved and quirky amateur detective, Jane Marple.

In A Pocket Full of Rye, Miss Marple is called upon to solve a series of murders that have taken place in the quaint English town of Much Benham. The first victim is a wealthy businessman named Rex Fortescue who dies suddenly after drinking his morning tea laced with poison. The police are called to investigate and soon discover that Fortescue has been involved in some shady business dealings and may have had several enemies.

As the investigation progresses, Miss Marple is introduced to the rest of the Fortescue family, including Rex's second wife, Adele, and his three grown children, Percival, Jennifer, and Elaine. Each member of the family has their own problems and secrets, and Miss Marple quickly realizes that any of them could be a suspect in Fortescue's murder.

As the story unfolds, Miss Marple uncovers more clues that point to a motive for the murder. She discovers that there may be a connection between the murders and a children's nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence." The rhyme features blackbirds baked in a pie, and Miss Marple suspects that it may hold a clue to the identity of the killer.

Miss Marple isn't the only one trying to solve the case. Inspector Neele of the police force is also on the trail of the murderer and he is convinced that one of the Fortescue family members is to blame. But when a second member of the family is found dead, Miss Marple and Inspector Neele realize that they may be dealing with a serial killer.

As the investigation continues, Miss Marple's unique brand of detective work leads her to uncover a web of deceit and betrayal. She discovers that the murders are all connected and that the killer is someone close to the Fortescue family. With the help of Inspector Neele, Miss Marple races to identify the murderer before they strike again.

Miss Marple: A Pocket Full of Rye is a classic whodunit filled with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The show is brilliantly acted and beautifully shot, capturing the charm and mystery of Agatha Christie's beloved novels. Fans of the genre will not be disappointed with this adaptation of one of her most famous works.
