Madame Bovary is a classic French novel written by Gustave Flaubert in 1856. The book tells the story of Emma Bovary, a young woman who is trapped in an unhappy marriage and longs for a more fulfilling life. The novel has been adapted for film and television many times, and in this episode of Masterpiece, viewers are transported to rural France in the mid-19th century to witness Emma’s struggles firsthand.

In the second episode of Masterpiece's sixth season, viewers are taken deeper into Emma’s world as she continues to search for happiness and fulfillment outside of her marriage to the dull and uninspiring Charles Bovary. Despite living in a beautiful home and having all of her basic needs met, Emma yearns for more excitement and passion in her life, and she sets out to find it wherever she can.

As she becomes more and more disenchanted with her life, Emma turns to various men for comfort and companionship. But each new relationship is ultimately unsatisfying, leaving her feeling even more lost and alone than before. Even as she becomes more reckless and desperate, Emma clings to the idea that true happiness is just around the corner, if only she could find it.

Meanwhile, Charles remains oblivious to his wife’s frustrations and continues to dote on her, even as she makes it clear that she is unhappy with their marriage. His unwillingness to acknowledge the problems in their relationship only serves to exacerbate Emma’s feelings of isolation and despair.

As the episode unfolds, viewers are drawn deeper into Emma’s world and begin to understand the depths of her despair. The stunning French countryside provides a backdrop for the action, and viewers are treated to a vivid and immersive portrayal of life in rural France during the mid-19th century.

Despite the serious themes at the heart of the story, Madame Bovary (2) is a visually stunning and emotionally gripping episode of Masterpiece that is sure to captivate viewers. With outstanding performances from the entire cast and a screenplay that stays true to Gustave Flaubert's original novel, this episode of Masterpiece is sure to be one of the highlights of the series.
