Kit and Matt encounter Jake Winfield and his daughter Ann, who have been left behind by their wagon train because they couldn't keep up. Matt discovers that his aunt and uncle are also with the train, and Kit and Matt accompany the Winfields on their journey west. Jake blames wagon master Aaron Thorpe for the journey's troubles and is determined to kill Thorpe when they catch up to the train.
