  • October 16, 2009

In Midnight Diner season 1 episode 2, titled "Nekomanma", we are introduced to a grieving woman, Shiori, who comes to Meshiya, the late-night diner, requesting a special dish called Nekomanma for her cat. Nekomanma is a dish that Shiori's mother used to make for her cat, and the cat has been refusing to eat anything else since the mother's passing.

As the diner owner, Master, prepares the dish, we learn more about Shiori's life and her relationship with her cat. Shiori struggles to cope with her mother's death and feels that her life has lost its meaning, but her devotion to her cat keeps her going. On the other hand, Shiori's father has moved on and has started a new family, leaving her feeling abandoned and alone.

As the night progresses, the other patrons in the diner chime in with their own accounts of pets and what they mean to them. From a young woman who has to sneak her pet into her tiny apartment to a famous actor with a pampered dog, each person shares a unique perspective on the bond between humans and animals.

Meanwhile, Master's quiet but attentive presence brings comfort to Shiori, and she is finally able to open up about her feelings of loss and loneliness. Through their conversation, Master offers Shiori a new perspective on her situation and helps her to understand that her mother's love is still with her, even after death.

When the Nekomanma is finished and brought out to Shiori's cat, we see the deep connection between the two, and Shiori finally feels a sense of purpose and meaning again.

Overall, "Nekomanma" is a touching episode that explores the power of pets to heal and comfort us in our time of need. Through heartfelt conversations and a delicious meal, the patrons of Meshiya come together to share their love for their furry companions and to show Shiori that she is not alone.
