Midnight Diner Season 2 Episode 1 Red Wieners, Again

  • October 13, 2011

Set in a small restaurant located in a quiet alley in Tokyo, Midnight Diner follows the lives of the diner's patrons and its enigmatic chef who only opens his doors from midnight to 7 in the morning. In season 2's premiere episode titled "Red Wieners, Again," we see the return of a regular customer, Tamako, who has a penchant for ordering the same dish of red wieners every time she visits the diner.

As the episode opens, we see Tamako enter the diner and take her usual seat at the counter. The chef greets her with a warm smile, and without even looking at the menu, she orders her usual dish of red wieners. Soon after, we meet a new customer, a young man named Watanabe, who takes the empty seat next to Tamako.

When Watanabe asks the chef for a recommendation, Tamako interjects and suggests he try the red wieners. Despite the chef's efforts to sway Watanabe towards another dish, he eventually relents and decides to give the red wieners a try. As they wait for their food, we learn more about Tamako and her love for red wieners.

Tamako explains that she has been coming to the diner for years and always orders the red wieners because they remind her of her late husband. She tells Watanabe that her husband used to work at a company that made red wieners, and even though they were just a simple food item, they held a special place in their hearts.

As the conversation continues, we see glimpses of the other patrons in the diner, including regulars like Yakuza boss, Master, and the mysterious woman known only as Ochou. Each character adds a unique flavor to the episode, making it feel like we are truly peeking into the lives of the diner's patrons.

When the red wieners finally arrive, Watanabe is pleasantly surprised at how delicious they are. Tamako watches him eat them with a smile, clearly happy that someone else is able to appreciate the dish as much as she does. As they continue to chat, we see a mutual respect develop between Tamako and Watanabe, despite their different ages and backgrounds.

Eventually, the other patrons start to filter out of the diner as dawn approaches. Tamako gets ready to leave, but not before ordering a second round of red wieners for takeout. As she pays for her food, the chef hands her a small bottle of ketchup, telling her that it pairs well with the dish. Tamako is overjoyed and thanks him profusely, before making her way out of the diner.

As the episode draws to a close, we see Watanabe take one last bite of the red wieners before thanking the chef and leaving the diner. The chef stands behind the counter, watching the sun rise as he cleans and prepares for the next evening's customers.

Overall, "Red Wieners, Again" is a heartwarming episode that perfectly encapsulates the cozy and intimate atmosphere of Midnight Diner. Through the simple act of ordering the same dish, Tamako and Watanabe are able to connect and form a bond over their shared love of red wieners. It's a reminder that sometimes, it's the small things in life that can bring us the most joy.
