Mikazuki Augus and Orga Itsuka, two orphans who have formed their own gang, Tekkadan, reach Earth to complete their mission of escorting Kudelia Aina Bernstein to Earth to lobby for the Martian independence. Tekkadan has to face a new cruel reality, as they have to navigate the murky world of politics and alliances. They become aware that there is more at stake than just their mission, and they have to watch their backs at all times. They soon realize that Kudelia's peaceful methods might only be affecting a small portion of the population, and there is a considerable resistance that opposes her views.
Season 1, Episode 15, "Trail of Footprints" continues from where it left off. After ensuring Kudelia's safety, Mikazuki, Orga, and the Tekkadan team find themselves stranded on Earth, trying to figure out the next steps. However, they receive word of a new task and a new set of orders: they must escort an Earth Branch representative to meet with a site manager. It seems like a regular job, and they think it'll be an easy task, but they soon realize that things are never easy on Earth.
They arrive at the mining plant at the appointed time, and when they discover that the working conditions are horrendous, they try to intervene. After all, they've seen the downside of the exploitation of the working-class population, which is being used as cheap labor. They witness the deplorable conditions that the workers are forced to endure. However, they quickly realize that it's not going to be easy getting the managers to listen to them. They meet the site manager, who is hostile towards them, and attempts to belittle them as they are just escorts.
Orga and Mikazuki understand that they're on Earth now, where they have to deal with a different kind of power. The power of politics and connections is what governs this world, and they're not used to it. They see how corrupt the system is, and how the upper-class individuals take advantage of the lower-class ones. The site manager tries to brush off their concerns, telling them that nobody cares about the workers. He also tells them that the workers should feel grateful for what they have, as they are being given the opportunity to work.
Despite their initial frustrations, Orga manages to keep his cool, and he tries to negotiate with the site manager diplomatically. He tells him that they'll leave quietly if the manager will provide some compensation to the workers. They have no intention of giving up, though. They remain observant, taking note of the site's defenses and any other crucial information that might be useful.
Meanwhile, Kudelia and Atra go on a sightseeing trip with some of Gjallahorn's members. Kudelia is fascinated by the Earth. It's the first time she's seen so much greenery, and she comments on how different it is from Mars. Atra also admires the scenery. She never thought there were such beautiful things on Earth, and it's refreshing to see something new after living in space for so long. They also witness how people on Earth are living, and how starkly different it is from Mars. Kudelia has an emotional outburst when she sees how happy the children are, despite the difficult living conditions.
This episode puts the plight of the working class into perspective. It talks about how people, who are forced to live in less than ideal conditions, often don't have a choice. Their options are limited, and they're forced to take whatever jobs they can get, even if it means risking their lives. The episode highlights how crucial it is for politicians to care about the well-being of the general public, as opposed to pandering to their own interests.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger, and viewers can't wait to see what will happen next. It's the Tekkadan team's first foray into Earth's politics, and the episode does a great job of showing viewers how different it is from the kind of battles they've fought until now. It's a compelling episode and an essential part of the show, as it sets the stage for what's to come.
