In Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans season 1 episode 5, titled "Beyond the Red Sky," the story takes a dark and emotional turn. The episode opens with the aftermath of last week's brutal battle. Tekkadan and the Brewers had clashed, with losses on both sides, including Tekkadan's own Aston Altland.
With their newest member fallen, Tekkadan returns to their base on Earth for repairs and recovery. Mikazuki Augus, the pilot of the Gundam Barbatos, is particularly affected by Aston's death. He feels intense guilt for not being able to save his comrade, and the emotional turmoil leads him down a dangerous path.
Meanwhile, Orga Itsuka, the leader of Tekkadan, tries to come to grips with the fact that they are now wanted criminals in the eyes of the law. This puts them in even more danger, and they have to be extra cautious moving forward.
As Tekkadan begins to repair their mobile suits, they receive a request for assistance from a colony on Mars. The colony is being attacked by Gjallarhorn, the Earth's military force, who are trying to take control of the colony's resource, the rare mineral known as "Ahab Reactors."
The situation on Mars is dire, and Tekkadan heeds the call for help. They launch a mission to Mars, but when they arrive, they find the situation is even worse than they anticipated. The colony is under heavy attack, and the people are trying to evacuate to the capital city.
Mikazuki, consumed with guilt and anger, takes matters into his own hands and pilots the Barbatos without permission, against orders from Orga. He then single-handedly takes on the Gjallarhorn attack forces, defying death and destruction, and causing a major stir among his team members.
Throughout the episode, Mikazuki has flashbacks to his childhood and his relationship with his mentor, who initially trained him how to pilot mobile suits. He struggles with the memories, questioning his abilities and the cost of war.
"Beyond the Red Sky" is a highly emotional episode that delves deep into the impact of war, loss, and duty. The tension builds as the story unfolds, and the intense action sequences are balanced with the somber moments of grief and despair. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the next installment.
