Droit de Seigneur Ben is the third episode of the first season of the British sitcom, My Family. In this episode, we see the harried Harper family struggling with a very delicate situation when they discover hair dye on the bathroom rug. In classic My Family style, we see Ben (played by Robert Lindsay) overreacting and jumping to conclusions. At first, he assumes his wife Susan (played by Zoe Wanamaker) is having an affair, but it turns out it's only his teenage daughter Nick (played by Daniela Denby-Ashe) experimenting with hair color.
Ben's initial reaction sets off a chain of events that culminate in a family meeting in the living room. In the middle of all the chaos, Ben receives a phone call from some old friends who are in town and want to meet up for dinner. After confirming with Susan, he agrees to meet his friends along with his son Michael (played by Gabriel Thomson).
At dinner, Ben's old friend tells him about a medieval tradition called "Droit de Seigneur" which translates to "the right of the lord." According to this tradition, if a couple newlywed, the lord of the manor has the right to sleep with the bride. Ben is horrified by the idea, but his friend assures him that it was just a tradition and has no relevance in modern times.
Meanwhile, back at home, Susan and Nick are dealing with their own issues. Susan is trying to get her daughter to open up to her while Nick is struggling to fit in at her new school after changing her hair color. Eventually, Nick opens up to her mom, and they reconcile, but Susans' attempts to discuss Ben's recent weird behavior are cut off by a phone call from Ben.
The next day, Ben is still reeling from the "Droit de Seigneur" conversation and decides to take matters into his own hands. He begins to bark orders at Susan, insisting that she tries on a ball-gown and that their son Michael must learn how to dance. He even tries to order various items online to help him achieve his goal. Eventually, he realizes the error of his ways and apologizes to his family for his behavior.
In the end, the episode wraps up with Ben and his family at the local village dance. Ben and his friends hilariously attempt to re-enact the "Droit de Seigneur" tradition, but they end up getting chased out of the hall. Ben apologizes to Susan for his recent behavior, and the family reconciles, albeit in typical My Family fashion, with a twist ending.
Overall, Droit de Seigneur Ben is a classic My Family episode that perfectly encapsulates the humor and heart of the show. It features the show's trademark quirky characters, hilarious antics, and touching family moments. The episode perfectly balances the absurdity of Ben's reaction to the hair-dye with the touching moments between Susan and Nick. Ultimately, it's an enjoyable episode that leaves you laughing and feeling good.
