  • March 8, 2021

Mysteries of the Abandoned takes viewers on a thrilling journey to discover the secrets behind the world's most intriguing and abandoned structures. In season 8 episode 14 titled Lost Islands of Desolation, the team investigates a group of remote islands off the coast of South America that have been abandoned for centuries.

Located in the harsh climate of the Southern Ocean, the Lost Islands of Desolation were once home to thriving whaling and sealing camps. However, when the animals were hunted to near extinction and the industry became unprofitable, the camps were abandoned, leaving behind a series of decaying buildings and abandoned equipment.

The team begins their exploration on the largest of the islands, known as the 'Mainland'. Here, they are confronted with the remains of a whaling station, where they discover the enormous boilers and tanks used to render down the whales' blubber. The team also uncovers the remnants of the living quarters, where the whalers and sealers would have lived in incredibly harsh conditions.

Moving on to other islands in the group, the team discovers even more remarkable structures and abandoned equipment. On one island, they find the remains of a steam locomotive that was used to transport the blubber and meat from the whaling stations to the processing plants. On another, they find the remains of a massive windmill that was used to generate electricity for the processing plant.

As they continue their exploration, the team comes across a wealth of other fascinating and haunting structures, including old piers, warehouses, and even a church that is still standing after nearly 200 years.

Despite the harsh conditions and the isolation of the islands, the team learns that people lived and worked on the Lost Islands of Desolation for nearly two centuries. The team also explores the impact that the whaling and sealing industries had on the surrounding ecosystem, and how the decline of the industry resulted in the ultimate abandonment of these remote islands.

Through stunning footage, interviews with experts and scientists, and gripping narration, Mysteries of the Abandoned presents a fascinating exploration of these remote and abandoned islands and the stories of the people who once called them home.
