Ep 4. Isle of Druids

In this episode of Mystic Britain season 2, entitled Isle of Druids, we delve into the history and mystery of the Druids, an ancient religious order that has long captured the public imagination. Our journey takes us to the Isle of Anglesey, off the coast of Wales, where we explore the ancient stones and standing stones that are believed to have played a central role in Druidic ceremonies.

We begin our journey in the town of Llangefni on Anglesey, where we meet local historian and Druid expert Kristoffer Hughes. Kristoffer provides us with a brief overview of the Druidic tradition, explaining that Druids were spiritual leaders and advisors in ancient Celtic society. They performed a range of functions, including acting as counsellors, healers, judges, and even poets. Druids were revered for their deep connection to nature and believed to possess magical powers.

As we set out to explore Anglesey, Kristoffer takes us to the iconic Llanddwyn Island, which is named after the Welsh patron saint of love, Dwynwen. The island is home to the ruins of the church of St. Dwynwen, as well as a lighthouse and a series of standing stones. We learn that standing stones were often used in Druidic ceremonies and were believed to have been imbued with special powers and energy.

Next, we travel to the northern tip of Anglesey to visit the ancient hillfort of Bryn Celli Ddu. This site is one of the most important Neolithic (Stone Age) sites in Britain and features an underground chamber or tomb that is aligned with the summer solstice sunrise. This alignment suggests that the Druids who built the site had a deep understanding of astronomy and the cycles of nature.

Our journey then takes us to the village of Brynsiencyn, where we visit the Anglesey Transport Museum. Here, we meet museum curator and Druid enthusiast Dafydd Tomos, who shows us a replica of a Druidic ceremonial robe and explains the significance of different symbols and motifs. We also learn that Druids performed animal sacrifices as part of their ceremonies and that certain animals, such as white bulls, were considered especially sacred.

Our final stop on Anglesey is the village of Llanfechell, where we visit the small but picturesque St. Mechell's Church. This church has a unique feature in that it has two separate doorways: one for men and one for women. According to legend, this division was put in place because Druids would gather in the churchyard to conduct their rituals and it was thought that men and women should not mix during these ceremonies. We also learn that the church is dedicated to Saint Mechell, a figure who has been linked to both Christianity and the Druidic tradition.
