  • February 15, 2017

In the 10th episode of the popular wildlife documentary show Nature's 35th season, titled "Spy In The Wild - Friendship", viewers are taken on a heartwarming journey to explore the complex social dynamics of animals. This episode, like others in the Spy In The Wild series, uses innovative animatronics disguised as animals to capture intimate footage of animal behavior up close and personal.

The episode begins with an introduction to the Spy Creatures, including Spy Babbler, Spy Macaw, and Spy Meerkat. As the Spy Creatures journey through the jungles, forests, and plains around the world, they reveal the many different ways in which friendship plays a vital role in the lives of animals. The narration highlights how, much like humans, animals need companionship, trust, and cooperation with others in their species.

The Spy Creatures take viewers on a journey to the South Pacific Ocean, where they explore the intricate relationships between bottlenose dolphins and their young. In a heartwarming scene, the Spy Dolphin befriends a pod of wild dolphins, highlighting how the pod's social bonds are a fundamental part of their survival in the ocean.

The Spy Meerkat then explores the complex social structures within a meerkat community in the Kalahari Desert of Africa. The viewer watches as the meerkats take turns taking charge of watching for predators, digging burrows, and caring for the young. The Spy Meerkat captures the behaviors of the alpha female, who must protect and nourish her young while keeping the community working together. The scene is especially poignant as the meerkats band together when confronted with a snake to ward off the potential predator.

Next, the Spy Creatures transport viewers to the forests of Japan, where they observe the behavior of Japanese macaques. This time, the Spy Macaque captures intimate footage of a young macaque who has lost his mother and must be accepted by the group. The Spy Macaque shows how the young pack must prove their value to be accepted into the group. The narrator explains that the young Japanese macaque must learn the rules of the troop to gain protection from his new family.

The final scene of the episode takes place in Tanzania, where the Spy Creatures discover a rarely seen friendship dynamic between a cheetah cub, named Mara, and a young male baboon. The Spy Hamster Ball follows Mara and the baboon, who provides unintended companionship and serves as Mara's guardian before reuniting his baboon family. The scene raises important questions about the natural diversity of social bonds across animal species.

"Spy In The Wild - Friendship" manages to capture the essence of how social bonds form the foundation of animal lives. By constructing animatronic animals that can blend in with their environment, the show brings the audience straight into a world where we can observe the subtle nuances of animal behavior. From the deep blue sea to the African savannas, these Spy Creatures bring us closer to understanding the magic of friendship across species. Overall, this episode is an emotional and educational journey through the lives of animals across the globe.
