In the fourth season of Nightmare Next Door, episode 8 titled New England Nightmare, the audience is taken to a small and peaceful town located in the state of Connecticut. This episode portrays the murder of a 23-year-old Paula who was brutally stabbed to death in her own apartment in the quiet town of Norwich.
The episode begins with the police's initial investigation into the murder of Paula. She lived in a safe and quiet neighborhood, and the police had a hard time understanding how such a violent crime could happen in this area. The case becomes even more mysterious, and the police fail to find any clues regarding the murder. Several neighbors and close friends of Paula are interviewed, and they couldn't recount anything unusual that happened the night before the murder.
As the investigation moves on, the police discover suspicious evidence from the victim's apartment. Broken picture frames, overturned furniture, and the victim's missing phone indicate that there was a violent struggle between the victim and the perpetrator. The primary suspect becomes Paula's boyfriend, David, who was the last known person to see Paula alive. David and Paula had been together for four years, and their relationship had been tumultuous during the last few months.
The police pick up David for questioning, and he spends the entire night at the police station. During the investigation, David is uncooperative and becomes evasive. He couldn't provide any alibi for the night of the murder and his account, which did not add up to what the police knew about Paula's movements that night. What bothered investigators more was that David seemed to show no emotion towards the murder of his girlfriend.
With the lack of witnesses and substantial evidence, the police are unable to charge David with the murder. The investigation goes cold, and the case remains unsolved for several years. However, the case resurfaces later on when a man confesses to the murder of Paula. The man, who was a handyman in the town at the time, was initially considered a suspect, but later released by the police due to lack of evidence. He had kept himself away from the case after being released by the police. One day, the man suffers from a stroke and decides to come clean about the murder of Paula before it's too late.
The police reopen the case, and the handyman confesses that he had followed Paula the night of the murder and had broken into her apartment to rob her. However, Paula caught him red-handed and that's when the situation spiraled out of control. The handyman panicked and ended up stabbing Paula multiple times with a kitchen knife in a fit of rage. The handyman leads the police to the place he had hidden evidence of the robbery, and the police were able to recover key pieces of evidence including a knife used to commit the murder. The handyman was charged with the murder of Paula and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
This episode of Nightmare Next Door sheds light on how even the most peaceful of neighborhoods can be home to violent crimes. Paula's murder shocked the community, and the lack of an arrest for several years had left them feeling helpless and afraid. However, it also brings the audience to an important realization that no matter how long or how hard it may be, justice always prevails in the end, and the culprits of even the most heinous of crimes will face punishment for their actions one day.
