Lee and Lucy find themselves in a precarious situation in this episode of Not Going Out titled "Life On a Mars Bar." Desperate to make some quick cash, the pair agrees to participate in a scientific study for a pharmaceutical company. However, things quickly go awry when they discover that they have unknowingly signed up for a trial that involves living on a diet of nothing but Mars Bars for three weeks.
As they struggle to survive on the sugary chocolate bars, Lee and Lucy find themselves at odds with each other, arguing over everything from the best way to ration their limited supply to who gets to eat the last bar. Meanwhile, their daily lives are put on hold as they are forced to spend almost all of their time either eating or thinking about eating.
As the days drag on, the pair begin to feel the effects of their restricted diet. Both Lee and Lucy start to feel lethargic and irritable, and their bodies begin to show signs of malnutrition. However, just when they think things can't get any worse, they discover that the study's true objective is not just to test the effects of a Mars Bar diet, but to see how far the participants are willing to go for money. As their desperation increases, Lee and Lucy find themselves faced with a difficult choice: continue with the study and risk their health and sanity, or quit and forfeit the money they so desperately need.
Throughout it all, the episode manages to find humor in the absurdity of the situation. The banter between Lee and Lucy is as sharp as ever, and the pair's increasingly bizarre behavior keeps the audience guessing as to what will happen next. However, beneath the laughs, "Life On a Mars Bar" also manages to touch on some deeper themes, such as the perils of financial desperation and the dangers of putting too much trust in authority figures.
All in all, this is a strong episode of Not Going Out that manages to balance comedy and drama in equal measure. While it may not be the show's most groundbreaking outing, it is an entertaining and thought-provoking addition to an already solid season.
