They soon meet the island's resident Professor, who tells Ash that the Gym Leader is none other than his own grandfather, and provides them all with numerous gadgets that he believes can help them on their journey. Upon reaching the Gym, they are greeted by the Island Kahuna - a fierce trainer and caretaker of the island's wild Pokémon. He explains to them that Grandpa is away and that he's been left in charge of the gym temporarily, but that they can still compete against him.

The group takes part in various challenges, from surfing to climbing, and get to know the Kahuna's many Pokémon. Meanwhile, Ash discovers another Trainer on the island who is also hoping to challenge the Gym and win the coveted Orange League trophy. The two chat and soon form a friendly rivalry, each determined to be the one to defeat the Kahuna.

As the day of battle finally arrives, Ash steps up to compete against the Kahuna's Pokémon, but quickly realizes that he's outmatched.
