Relative Race is a television show that focuses on four teams, each consisting of two people who are distantly related, competing against each other in a race across the United States. The goal of the show is for each team to discover their unknown relatives and complete a DNA test at the finish line. Each team is given a pre-programmed car and a cell phone to communicate with their challenge supervisor.
In season 3 episode 1, the teams are introduced, and we get to observe a few of their emotional family reunions. The teams already know each other as they first met before the show, and they are all eager to start this competition, which lasts for ten days and covers thousands of miles on the road.
The first team is Team Blue, consisting of Ed and Maria, who are third cousins. They come from Chicago and are excited to start this journey across the United States. Maria's father and Ed's grandfather had not spoken for years due to an argument, and their parents want them to settle the feud.
The second team is Team Green, who are married couple Shawn and Aimee, and are third cousins, as well. They come from the Pacific Northwest and have a little baby girl who is also part of the adventure. They want to share this experience with their daughter, and Aimee admits that she wants to prove to her family that her husband is good enough for her.
The third team is Team Black, consisting of Jerome and his cousin, Monique, who is a first-timer on the show. Besides being related, they are also best friends. Jerome has participated in the previous season but did not win; he hopes to do better this time. Monique is a nurse who has never travelled before, and she wants to see new things and places.
And last but not least, the fourth team, is Team Red, who are Dustin and Kelsy, a brother and sister from Arizona. They come from a family of ten siblings and have lost touch with some of their relatives over the years. They want to reconnect with their family roots and make new connections.
Throughout this episode, the teams race to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they are met by their challenge supervisor, Dan. They are given the first challenge — to take a team photo at the site of the original Pony Express station. But before they get there, they need to solve a riddle which would provide them with the exact locations of other important historic places that they need to visit on their way to the final destination. The riddling challenge takes them all around the city and its surroundings, and the team that solves it first will earn an advantage in the upcoming challenges.
During the race to Salt Lake City, the teams experience various difficulties; for instance, Team Green's car breaks down, and they have to fix it, losing precious time. Also, Team Black gets lost a couple of times, and they have to backtrack. However, all teams finally make it to the challenge site, where they get to meet Dan and complete their task.
As the four teams journey to the finish, they will encounter new family members who have been discovered by a genealogist who helped create the show. The race is not just about winning but also about discovering your roots, making emotional connections, and learning about your extended family history.
In conclusion, Season 3 Episode 1 of Relative Race is an exciting and emotionally charged episode that introduces us to the four teams and sets them on their journey. As viewers, we get to see how the different teams will interact, what challenges they will face, and ultimately, how far they will go to find their family members.
