As the title suggests, Reply 1988 is a drama that takes the viewer back to the year 1988, set in the Ssangmun-dong neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea. The show follows the lives of five families who live on the same street, while exploring themes like family bonds, friendship, growing up, and love.
Season 1, Episode 7 of the show is aptly titled "Episode 7," and continues the story in a delightful manner. The episode opens with two of the main characters, Deok-sun and Sun-woo, going out for a walk early in the morning. While they enjoy the scenery, they hear some music playing and decide to follow it to its source. They end up in front of a house that has a sign saying "Talent Agency," and investigate further.
The house turns out to be a place where an older man, Mr. Yoo, trains aspiring singers. Deok-sun, being interested in singing herself, is fascinated by what she sees and hears, and decides to audition for him. She sings "Kiss" by Princess, a popular song from that era, and Mr. Yoo is impressed with her talent. He offers her a place in his class, explaining that he only accepts students he thinks have potential to make it big.
Meanwhile, Deok-sun's family is going through some turmoil of their own. Her father is stressed out because he has borrowed a large sum of money from the bank to start a business, and is having trouble with repayment. He is forced to pawn his wife's wedding ring to make ends meet, causing a big rift in their relationship.
Over at Sun-woo's house, his relationship with his strict father also takes a hit when he fails a test due to his involvement in a school band. His father is angry with him for wasting time on music when he should be focusing on his studies. This puts a strain on their relationship, leaving Sun-woo feeling torn between his passion and duty.
The episode then takes a turn towards the younger generation's budding romances as well. We see Jeong-hwan, who has a crush on Deok-sun, trying to get her attention by sending her an anonymous letter filled with compliments. Unfortunately for him, the letter lands in the hands of one of Deok-sun's friends, and ends up causing more confusion than admiration.
Lastly, we are introduced to the character of Dong-ryong, who is the jester of the group. He is always up for some mischief and has a carefree attitude towards life. He gets himself and his friends into trouble by going out to play late at night, even though they've all been told to stay in. They cause a commotion in the neighborhood, and eventually get caught by the adults.
All in all, Episode 7 of Reply 1988 is a well-paced episode that seamlessly weaves in multiple storylines. It gives a glimpse into the different challenges that families and individuals face, irrespective of age. The episode also highlights the simpler pleasures of life, like friendship, music, and laughter, that can provide much-needed support during tough times. As we see the characters navigate through their problems, we are left wondering what their next move will be.
