In Salem season 2 episode 1 titled "Cry Havoc," the supernatural horror series continues its exploration of the 17th century witch trials in colonial Massachusetts. The show picks up where it left off in the first season with Mary Sibley (played by Janet Montgomery) trying to maintain her power as a witch while her town turns against her.

The episode begins with Mary in hiding, trying to avoid execution for her crimes. She's being hunted by the new magistrate, John Alden (Shane West), who is determined to see her punished for her role in the Salem witch trials. Meanwhile, Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel) is struggling with his own demons as he tries to reconcile his faith with his growing doubts about the nature of witchcraft.

As the episode unfolds, we're introduced to several new characters who play important roles in the season-long arc. Anne Hale (Tamzin Merchant) is a young woman who comes from a prominent Salem family and is struggling to come to terms with her own witchcraft. Her father, Magistrate Hale (Jeremy Crutchley), is a powerful figure in town who seems to have his own agenda when it comes to the witch trials.

Another new character is Tituba (Ashley Madekwe), a former slave who is now working with Mary to protect their coven. Tituba has her own agenda and is not afraid to use her powers to achieve her goals. She quickly becomes a crucial player in the season's plot.

One of the most notable aspects of "Cry Havoc" is the show's continued exploration of the horror and violence inherent in the witch trials. The episode features several gruesome scenes, including a public punishment for one of Mary's followers and a tense confrontation between Mary and Tituba. The show doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of its subject matter, and viewers should be prepared for some disturbing imagery.

However, the episode also introduces several elements of humor and lighter moments to balance out the darker elements. Mary's interactions with her familiar, a talking toad named Brown Jenkins, provide some comedic relief. And there are several scenes that hint at deeper political and social issues that will likely be explored in later episodes.

Overall, "Cry Havoc" is a strong start to the second season of Salem. The show's cast continues to impress, with Montgomery and West in particular delivering standout performances. The writing is tight and focused, setting up several intriguing plot threads that will keep viewers hooked throughout the season. Fans of horror and supernatural dramas should definitely give Salem a chance.
