It's time for the girls to confront the big "M" word: monogamy. With Charlotte's engagement to the handsome doctor, Trey, and Miranda's push to stand by her man, it's a hot topic that leaves single gal Carrie feeling a bit left out. However, Samantha is still determined to remain as noncommittal as ever, even as she becomes seriously involved with a charming and wealthy restaurateur named Richard.

The episode kicks off with an awkward "double date" between Charlotte and Trey, and Miranda and her already-committed boyfriend, Skipper. While Charlotte can't stop gushing about her love for Trey and upcoming nuptials, Miranda begins to feel uneasy about Skipper's seeming inability to commit. Meanwhile, Samantha is busy living her best life with Richard, but her laissez-faire attitude towards love and relationships is put to the test when she realizes that he might be the first man to truly challenge her.

As always, the girls turn to each other for advice and support. Charlotte is convinced that monogamy is the key to a happy life, while Samantha can't fathom the thought of being tied down to just one man. Miranda falls somewhere in the middle, questioning whether or not she should be putting up with Skipper's flakiness or taking a stand for true commitment.

Throughout the episode, the girls grapple with the idea of monogamy and whether or not it's really the best way to live. Charlotte's rose-colored glasses start to dim as she realizes that even the most devoted couples have their fair share of problems, while Samantha struggles to keep her cool when Richard reveals that he isn't exactly "the marrying type." Miranda teeters on the edge of breakup or makeup with Skipper, eventually taking a stand for what she wants and needs in a relationship.

As always, the girls come out the other side of their respective love dilemmas with renewed perspectives on life and love. Carrie ends the episode with some poignant musings on the nature of monogamy, reminding viewers that there's no right or wrong way to approach love, but to always stay true to oneself.

Overall, "The Monogamists" is an honest and thought-provoking look at the complexities of love and commitment. With plenty of laughs, tears, and heart-to-heart talks between the characters, it's one of the standout episodes of the first season of "Sex and the City."
