Now that she has added her personal journey to her professional quest, Anu sets out to explore the character, causes and cures of spirit illnesses, which appear to be rampant around the Kullu Valley. She visits Shaman Hardayal, who allows her to film a private exorcism session. Anu witnesses a bizarre and bewildering ritual, where Hardayal beats himself with chains and accepts a sacrificial lamb. Anu then attends a festival devoted mass exorcism where she is immersed into an emotionally charged atmosphere with several women dancing wildly, apparently suffering from spirit possessions.

Anu meets Hardayal, the oracular shaman, and witnesses his divination sessions, where locals "chat"informally with their deity through him. And any skepticism that Anu may have harbored about such matters is shattered where she has her own up-close and personal encounter with Tej Singh, the shaman of a snake god who accurately intuits a major problem that Anu has been facing.

Anu meets up with Meru, her local guide for this series, who helps her get a deeper insight in the cultural context of Himachali shamans. Meru takes her to a vibrant village festival, celebrating the birthday of Hadimba Devi, the powerful demon goddess and patron deity of Kullu Valley. At the festival, Anu encounters her first shaman, Tularam. Anu is enthralled as Tularam ritually invokes the Hadimba Devi, goes into an intense divine possession trance and then speaks as the Devi to all the people present.
