Frank Gallagher, a single father of six children, is a drunk and drug addict who spends most of his time in bars and casinos. His eldest daughter Fiona tries to keep the family together with the help of her siblings, but has her own struggles with relationships and parenting. In season 3 episode 8 of Shameless, titled "Where There's a Will," the Gallagher family faces a new challenge.
The episode opens with Fiona waking up in bed with her boss, Mike. She tries to sneak out of his apartment without waking him up, but is caught. Mike admits that he is interested in a serious relationship with Fiona, but she tells him that she is not ready for a commitment. Meanwhile, Lip goes to the university financial aid office to try to get his scholarship reinstated, but is told he needs to find a donor for the school.
Frank tries to scam his way into getting a prescription for painkillers, but fails. He goes to Sheila's house and tells her that he is dying of cancer, hoping to get sympathy and drugs. Sheila, who is still recovering from her agoraphobia, falls for Frank's lie and tries to help him. She takes him to a support group for cancer patients and encourages him to share his story. However, Frank's deception is exposed when one of the actual cancer patients recognizes him from the casino.
Debbie and Carl try to earn money by selling homemade sweets and running errands for elderly neighbors. They encounter a quirky old woman who claims to be a psychic and tells them that they will be rich someday. Debbie doesn't believe her, but Carl is excited by the idea and starts planning his future as a millionaire. Later, the psychic dies and leaves her entire estate to the siblings, including a valuable painting and a mysterious locked chest.
Ian, struggling with his bipolar disorder, runs into his ex-boyfriend Mickey at a convenience store. They argue about their relationship and Mickey admits that he misses Ian. However, Ian tells him that he is seeing someone new and doesn't want to get back together. Later, Ian is approached by a man named Ned who says that he knew Ian's mother and wants to tell him something important. Ian agrees to meet with him, but the encounter doesn't go as planned.
As the episode progresses, each character faces their own challenges and makes choices that will have ripple effects on the rest of the season. "Where There's a Will" is a classic example of Shameless' blend of comedy and drama, moving seamlessly between heartwarming moments and dark humor.
