Slow Horses season 1 episode 2 Work Drinks is an intense episode which explores the real motives and fears of the MI5 agents of Slough House during a karaoke night out. The episode opens with River Cartwright, one of the slow horses, preparing to attend a work drink with other employees of Slough House, organized by the head of the security services, Jamie Hyde. The scene is set in a typical pub, with neon lights and the singing of classic hits. The slow horses are uncertain and anxious since this is the place where every MI5 agent goes out to relax, and they know that they are not considered part of the elite agents of the service. They are ridiculed by their colleagues and despised by the rest of the organization.

The plot picks up pace when River starts talking to a woman who uncharacteristically visits the place during the event. After a brief conversation, he realizes that she is working undercover for Russian intelligence. This realization shakes him and makes him think about how memorable the evening could become. Meanwhile, Palmer and Brandon are seen talking about the possibility of going back to work for a private security company after leaving MI5, due to their resignation.

The main character, Jackson Lamb, with his characteristic crass and ferocious attitude, also features in the episode. He confronts the rest of the MI5 agents and their elitist attitudes in a way that only Jackson could do. Lamb is a fearsome character and his gruff demeanor has helped him to become one of the most respected and feared members of Slough House. Nevertheless, his reckless attitude causes trouble when he exclaims to his colleagues that 'if you go down tonight, I am not getting any of you out.' This causes a real burden of fear and doubt amongst the rest of the slow horses, especially River Cartwright, who is reminded of the story of John Le Carre, in which the Russian spy of the book Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was identified when he unwittingly sang the wrong song in a London Karaoke.

As the episode progresses, we see the slow horses drinking heavily, venting their frustration about the unfair treatment they receive, and indulging in karaoke. The highlight of the episode comes when the slow horses perform a rendition of Spandau Ballet's 1983 hit True, in a cheeky nod to the famous John Le Carre novel. Their performance outshines the other MI5 agents, and they are seen as a group of outcasts who refuse to give in to the stifling MI5 culture.

Finally, the episode ends with the slow horses leaving the pub after an evening of emotional tension. While they are walking home, they are approached by a homeless man who asks them for a light to light a cigarette, and this unexpected appearance is a metaphorical representation of a key message of the show: that everyone has the potential to have a hidden talent, and that not everyone is able to conform to or fit in with the 'elite' in society.

In conclusion, Work Drinks is an excellent episode in which the slow horses confront their fears and anxieties while attending a karaoke night out with their MI5 colleagues. Jackson Lamb's aggressive nature masks the fear felt by everyone in the service, who are all working to maintain the safety of the nation. Ultimately, this episode is filled with tension and drama and demonstrates how the slow horses stand out from the rest of the MI5 agents and deal with their situation in their unique way.
