Solitary is a Fox TV reality show involving nine people in a contest against each other to win a $50,000 jackpot. They willingly endure rigorous activities and tests to break them down for a chance to go home as the sole winner of the money. They are denied sleep, food, and subject to mind control, pain and other soul breaking experiments to see how much each can endure. The more groundbreaking aspect of this reality show is that each contestant goes through these trials totally alone. Housed in individual octagon shaped pods, they have nobody but themselves to turn to for support or companionship. Their only interaction is the voice of "Val." Val is not seen only heard, a mostly computerized voice that guides each player to their next task. Players only have access to privacy in the bathroom which is off the pod. However, in order to go to the restroom, they must first press a button on the TV like console to ask Val permission to exit. Any other private need such as sleep is controlled by Val. Food consists of a tasteless protein or health bar pushed into a food slot in the door.

To further isolate players in their individual solitary confinement pods, all access to any concept of time is eliminated. Clocks or watches are not allowed. Lighting and temperature are also controlled so contestants do not know if it is night or day or even the climate of the city around them. The concept of the show is to satisfy the curiosity of the viewers. Will the contestants break down or will they show amazing strength once all measure of humanity and societal routines are gone?
