Steven Universe is an animated series that follows the story of a young boy called Steven, who lives with a group of magical beings known as the Crystal Gems. In this episode, House Guest, Steven's father, Greg, comes to stay with the Gems after an accident puts him out of commission.
From the start, Steven is excited about his dad's visit because he doesn't get to spend much time with him due to his music touring. However, Greg's arrival is not quite what Steven expected. When Greg shows up at the Gems' residence, he's covered in bandages and is unable to move around on his own due to a leg injury. Steven is worried that his father's condition is serious and feels helpless since he is a child and doesn't know how to help him.
To cheer him up, the Gems tell Steven and Greg about their ancient homeworld, gem technology, and some other stuff. Things seem to be going well until Greg accidentally electrocutes himself with a toaster. The shock causes him to burp and release a cloud of gas that smell like rotting garbage, knock the Gems unconscious, and disrupt many of their magical artifacts.
The Gems attempt to recover from the accident, but it becomes clear that fixing the damage may take longer than anyone had anticipated. As a result, Greg is forced to stay with them for a much longer time than planned, much to Steven's delight. However, with Greg recovering from his injury and the Gems struggling to repair their artifacts, the odd circumstances of Greg's stay make it hard for Steven to bond with his father since he's always either sleeping or in need of care.
Despite the setbacks, Steven remains hopeful and makes it his mission to take care of his dad. He ends up spending most of his time trying to make Greg feel better, which leads to him taking up a number of chores for the Gems and Greg to make their stay comfortable. Along the way, Steven learns a lot about himself and seeks to put his new knowledge to good use while his dad is around.
However, the situation is not as smooth sailing as it appears. Steven slowly realizing that the accident has affected Greg's state of mind and caused him to become a bit depressive. Greg expresses his disappointment, helpless, and uselessness since he is unable to perform even basic tasks like walking, and he has to stay with his son and the Crystal Gems - who know far more about magical artifacts and gem technology than he does. As the days pass, the pressure starts to build up on Steven as he becomes the sole caretaker for his father and the Gems.
In the end, Steven decides to take a break from being a caregiver and goes outside to play his ukulele, something he normally does when he needs to clear his head. As he plays, he comes to realize that he can't do everything by himself and that he needs to reach out to the other Gems for help and support. From then on, Steven begins to take things easy and delegates some of his responsibilities to the Gems while still keeping a close eye on his dad's recovery process.
House Guest, the 27th episode of Steven Universe, explores the different nuances of caregiving and the impact of accidents on families. The episode features lots of heartwarming moments as Steven learns valuable lessons about responsibility, compassion, and self-care. The episode is a must-watch for anyone interested in animation and storytelling, and it guarantees to leave the viewer teary-eyed.
