Ep 4. Bubble Buddies / Serious Steven

In the fourth episode of Steven Universe’s first season, titled “Bubble Buddies / Serious Steven,” we see Steven’s attempt to go on a date with his crush, Connie. The sweet and shy young boy is crushed when Connie goes to a dance with another boy, so Steven decides to take things into his own hands and rescues Connie from the bottom of the ocean with his magical bubble. Of course, this doesn’t stop Steven’s inquisitive nature, and he accidentally sets off a chain of events that could lead to the complete destruction of the temple.

Throughout “Bubble Buddies / Serious Steven,” we get a glimpse of the show’s underlying themes of friendship, trust, and teamwork. Steven learns that it’s not only okay to be scared, but it’s important to have people in your life who understand and support you through those tough moments. Despite the fact that he’s a magical being, Steven is still just a kid who’s trying to navigate the complicated world of growing up, and it’s his connection with Connie and the crystal gems that give him the courage he needs to face his fears.
