After Schanke discovers that the third victim in a series of fatal sexual assaults subscribed to a local dating service, Natalie returns to her lab to examine the body. Reminded that he has forgotten her birthday, Nick heads out for a last minute gift as Natalie recalls their first meeting when he was supposedly killed trying to stop a robbery. Then, bumping into a friendly stranger - Roger - at a nearby market and accepting his offer to walk her home, Natalie runs into Nick as he is delivering her present. After meeting Roger for lunch, Natalie agrees to an impromptu trip to the beach.
