This music competition series brings together some of America's best gospel singers and pits them against each other on stage. A panel of judges narrows the field to a group of finalists, and eventually a single winner will remain standing. Judges include Yolanda Adams, Kierra Sheard, Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary, Bebe Winans & Cece Winans.

Through each season of the series, singers deliver performances that are evaluated by a panel of judges. In between performance rounds, singers are given advice by professional singers. The performers are gradually eliminated until, at the end of the season, a single performer is left to be crowned the winner of the season. In these ways, the series follows the formula established by many other performance competition series. The winner of each season is awarded a recording contract, a cash prize, and a new car.

The series debuted on the BET cable network in 2007 and ran through 2015. The series was revived in 2019, and its ninth season debuted in September 2019. Production on a tenth season began early in 2020, and the first three episodes of the season were recorded in front of a live audience. Following these episodes, production of the series was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. When production resumed, episodes were filmed remotely without a live audience. Broadcast of the new responsibly filmed episodes resumed in early July of 2020.

The series is produced by prolific producer Tyler Perry and is based at Perry's production studio complex in Atlanta, Georgia.
