Bay Kennish (Vanessa Marano) is struggling to adjust to her new life at the art school. She misses her family and friends back home. She is having trouble making new friends and keeping up with her classes. Meanwhile, Daphne Vasquez (Katie Leclerc) is feeling frustrated at the clinic where she is doing her community service. She doesn't feel like she is making a difference and is questioning her decision to pursue a career in medicine.

The two girls decide to go out for the night in an attempt to blow off steam. They end up at a party in a rough part of town. While there, they witness a shooting and are forced to flee. When they return to their dorm, they are confronted by campus security. The girls are frightened and unsure of what to do. They don't want to get in trouble but they also don't want to get involved further in the incident.

Meanwhile, John Kennish (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn Kennish (Lea Thompson) are dealing with their own issues. John is worried about money and is considering selling his car dealership. Kathryn is still struggling with her writing career and is feeling like a failure. She decides to take a job as a substitute teacher to try and make some extra money.

Regina Vasquez (Constance Marie) is feeling left out of Daphne's life now that she is living on campus. She decides to try and connect with her daughter by volunteering at the clinic where Daphne is doing her community service. But when she tries to give Daphne advice, it only drives a wedge between them. Daphne feels like her mother doesn't understand her and is frustrated that she can't seem to make a difference at the clinic.

As the episode progresses, tensions continue to rise for all of the characters. Bay and Daphne realize that they can't keep their involvement in the shooting a secret any longer and must come forward. John and Kathryn have a heart-to-heart about their financial problems and decide to put their house up for sale. Regina and Daphne make amends and come up with a new plan to help the clinic.

In the end, everyone is left to deal with the consequences of their actions. The episode touches on important themes like gun violence, financial struggles, and the challenges of being a parent. It also highlights the importance of communication, both between family members and within communities. Overall, "Black and Gray" is a powerful and thought-provoking episode of Switched at Birth that will stay with viewers long after it's over.
