  • September 6, 2005

Ray Romano, the popular American comedian, actor, and screenwriter, is the special guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Season 3 Episode 2. The show host Ellen DeGeneres welcomes Ray with her trademark exuberance and the audience erupts into applause. Ray and Ellen engage in a fun and lively banter about various topics, including Ray's famous sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond and his new comedy show, Get Shorty.

Ellen kicks off the show with a monologue that includes some hilarious and topical jokes. She then welcomes Ray Romano onto the stage and introduces him as one of her favorite comedians. Ray and Ellen share a warm hug as the audience continues to cheer. Ray looks dapper in a black jacket and jeans, his trademark glasses perched on his nose.

Ellen starts off by asking Ray about his current project, Get Shorty, which is based on the 1990 novel by Elmore Leonard and was also adapted into a 1995 movie. Ray plays Rick Moreweather, a hack Hollywood producer who is looking to make it big in the industry. Ray says he loves working on the show and was thrilled to be a part of it. Ellen asks about his character's wardrobe, which includes a lot of Hawaiian shirts, and Ray jokes that he doesn't know how he got stuck wearing them.

Ellen then moves on to discuss Everybody Loves Raymond, one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. Ray reflects on the show's success and thanks the fans for their support. Ellen asks Ray about his co-stars and Ray says he is still good friends with them all, especially the late Peter Boyle who played his father on the show. He reveals that Peter was a great mentor to him and that they shared a lot of laughs.

Ellen then switches gears and asks Ray about his family life. Ray has four children with his wife Anna, and Ellen quips that he must have a lot of practice with child-rearing from his experience on the show. Ray jokes that he gets a lot of parenting advice from fans who recognize him in public. Ellen then plays a hilarious clip from Everybody Loves Raymond in which Ray tries to discipline his children.

Next, Ellen welcomes the multi-talented Alicia Keys onto the stage. Alicia is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress, known for hits like "Fallin'," "No One," and "Girl on Fire." She looks beautiful in a blue jumpsuit and sports a sleek hairdo. Ellen introduces her as a friend of the show and the audience gives her a warm welcome.

The interview starts with Ellen asking Alicia about her new album, Here, which was released in 2016. Alicia talks about the inspiration behind the record and how she wanted to capture the essence of New York City, where she grew up. Ellen then asks Alicia about her work as an actress, including her role in the movie The Secret Life of Bees. Alicia says she loved working on the film and enjoyed the challenge of playing a character who was different from herself.

Ellen then brings up Alicia's famous hairdo, which she has been rocking since the beginning of her career. Alicia laughs and says that she has been wearing her hair in braids since she was a little girl and that it is a part of her identity. Ellen asks if she ever gets tired of it and Alicia says she doesn't, but sometimes she will wear it in a different style just to mix things up.

Ellen then plays a game with Alicia called "5 Second Rule," in which they have to name three things in different categories in five seconds or less. Alicia does surprisingly well, even managing to name three brands of toothpaste in five seconds! Ellen and Alicia are clearly having a great time, and the audience is laughing and clapping along.

Finally, the show comes to an end, and Ellen thanks Ray and Alicia for being such great guests. Ray and Alicia hug it out, and Ellen tells the audience to tune in to the next episode for more exciting guests and fun moments.
