Mason (Kyle Bornheimer) and the rest of the family are all geared up to attend an annual block party that takes place in their neighborhood, but everything seems to be going wrong, to the point where it seems like it might be impossible for the family to enjoy any of the festivities. In the midst of all the chaos, the family plumber, Dan (Bobby Lee), shows up and announces that he wants to bring his new girlfriend, Cori (Jamie-Lynn Sigler), to the event. At first, everyone is a little taken aback, not only because they haven't seen Dan in a while, but because they're not sure how well Cori will fit in with the rest of the group. But as they spend more time with her, they start to see that maybe she's not so bad after all.

As the family tries to enjoy themselves at the block party, they are bombarded by a series of mishaps and misunderstandings that threaten to ruin the whole event. First, Mason gets into a dispute with their neighbor, Mr. Jankowski (Richard Riehle), over the noise that their family dog is making. Then, Jack (JK Simmons) gets into a heated debate with the local civic association president, Mr. Thompson (Stephen Tobolowsky), over the decorations that the family has put up for the party. And things only get worse from there.

But through it all, Dan and Cori try to keep the mood light and help everyone to have a good time. They make jokes, play games, and generally do their best to ease tensions and bring everyone together. And as the night wears on, it starts to look like they might just succeed. Mason and Jack reconcile with their neighbors, Mr. Jankowski and Mr. Thompson, respectively, and the rest of the family starts to loosen up and have fun.

In the end, the block party turns out to be a huge success, thanks largely to the efforts of Dan and Cori. The family is able to put aside their differences and enjoy themselves, and everyone agrees that they should make this an annual tradition. As the night winds down and the guests start to head home, Mason and his father share a moment of reflection, marveling at how much has changed since the last time they attended this event. They both agree that, no matter what happens in the future, they will always have these memories to cherish.
