Titled "Storm Chasers," episode fourteen of season one of The Inspectors follows the story of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) as they investigate a group of scammers who take advantage of natural disasters.
The episode opens with a tornado hitting a small town in Georgia, leaving behind a trail of destruction. In the aftermath, a group of scammers take advantage of the situation by approaching the victims and offering to clean up their property for a fee. The scam artists bring in heavy machinery and make promises of a swift clean up, but in reality, they do more damage than good. After taking the payment, they disappear without completing the job.
The USPIS is made aware of the scam after receiving multiple complaints from the victims. Postal inspector Amanda Wainwright (played by Jessica Lundy) and her team are brought in to investigate. They start by visiting the affected areas and speaking to the victims. They soon learn that the scammers always leave behind a business card with a logo of a tree on it, claiming to be a tree removal company. Amanda's team tries to track the scammers down using this information, but they soon realize that the company is not registered with the state and has no physical address.
The team is then introduced to an elderly man who was scammed out of $3000. He shows them the business card he was given and explains how he was pressured into paying upfront. The team is saddened by his story and decides to use him as bait to catch the scammers in the act. The man agrees to wear a wire and go undercover to a meeting with the scammers. He hands over a wad of cash to the scammers, who quickly pocket the money and rush off.
Amanda and her team track down the scammers' vehicle and catch two of them, but the third gets away on foot. They are able to recover the stolen money and return it to the elderly man. The team then traces the third scam artist to a nearby hotel and catches him as he tries to flee. They bring the scammers in for questioning where they admit to their wrongdoing.
As the episode ends, Amanda and her team reflect on how the scammers not only took advantage of the natural disaster but also the kindness of the victims. They make a plea to the viewers, reminding them to be wary of offers that seem too good to be true and to verify the credentials of anyone they hire to do work on their property.
Overall, "Storm Chasers" is a powerful episode that sheds light on a growing issue in society. The Inspectors' portrayal of the USPIS adds a unique investigative twist to the story, and the emotional connection to the victims adds depth to the overall message. This episode does an excellent job of informing viewers about a specific scam while also reminding them to stay vigilant.
