In season 1 episode 3 of The Last Alaskans: Remote Access titled "Survival Mode," the Alaskan wilderness is unforgiving as the series continues to follow the lives of the tough and resilient families who have decided to live off the grid in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth.

As winter sets in, we see the Alaskans shift into "survival mode," becoming even more self-sufficient as they brace themselves for the challenges the season will bring. We follow Tyler and Ashley Selden as they prepare their homestead for the snow that is sure to come. The couple has been living off the land for seven years, and we see them working to gather firewood, stockpile food, and collect rainwater before it freezes over.

Meanwhile, Bob Harte is struggling to recover from a serious leg injury that he sustained the previous year. Bob is the longest-standing resident of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, having lived there for over four decades. But in a poignant moment, we see Bob question whether he will ever fully recover from the injury and wonder how much longer he can continue to live in the wilderness.

Finally, we meet Heimo Korth, who has been living in Alaska for over 40 years and is one of the few remaining natives of the area. Heimo has managed to carve out a life for himself alongside his wife, Edna, and their two daughters in a place where others wouldn't dare to venture. We see Heimo preparing for winter by building a sauna to stay warm, and we witness his enduring love for the land that he has called home for so many years.

As the episode progresses, we see the characters navigate the harsh realities of life in the Alaskan wilderness, from grappling with illness and injuries to the challenges of daily survival. But we also see the beauty of their way of life, with stunning shots of the landscape and wildlife that surrounds them providing a window into a world few of us will ever know.

"Survival Mode" is a compelling and emotional episode, capturing both the struggles and triumphs of those who have chosen to live off the grid in one of the most remote and challenging places on Earth. It serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and offers a glimpse into a world that is at once awe-inspiring and unforgiving.
