Several months have passed since our favorite magicians graduated from Brakebills, and they’re no longer content to just sit around and wait for the next supernatural crisis to befall them. No, they’re going out into the world and making their own problems.
As we open on the third episode of the second season of The Magicians, our band of magical misfits are on a quest to find a god. More specifically, they’re hoping to track down an ancient deity that can break their friend’s curse.
We’ve seen glimpses of Julia’s predicament in previous episodes, but now we’re getting a full view of what’s been going on in her life since the events of season one. After making a deal with a demon last year, Julia was stripped of her magic and left powerless. Worse, she was faced with the horrifying realization that she’d been left with something far more insidious: a malicious creature growing inside of her, feeding off her pain and misery.
In search of a cure, Margo, Eliot, Alice, Penny, Quentin, and Kady set out on a dangerous mission to find an old god who might be able to help. The only catch? The god is said to be incredibly selective about his worshipers. In order to even get his attention, the group must first pass a series of tests designed to weed out the unworthy.
As the team takes on the first of these challenges, it’s clear that they’re in for a rough ride. The test takes the form of a magical illusion, a maze that seems to warp and twist around them, leading them in circles and confusing their senses. The catch? Only one of them can make it through the maze. The others will be trapped inside the illusion forever.
It’s a high stakes situation, and tensions run high as the group tries to work together to solve the puzzle. Some members of the team are more invested than others in making it through to the other side alive (Alice, looking at you), and the stress of the situation quickly starts to crack the group’s already fragile dynamics.
As they inch their way through the labyrinth, they start to realize that there may be more going on here than just a simple test. Someone or something is manipulating the maze, and it seems intent on taking them down one by one.
Without giving too much away, let’s just say that the team eventually makes it to the other side of the maze (not all of them, unfortunately), and they’re immediately faced with the next challenge. This one involves summoning the god they’re searching for, a process that requires more than just magical power.
This episode is basically a non-stop rollercoaster of action, as our heroes battle supernatural threats and try to navigate the treacherous waters of their own relationships. There’s drama, danger, and A+ character development, as we get to see how each member of the team reacts to the pressure of their situation.
Overall, Divine Elimination is a standout episode that showcases all of the things that make The Magicians such a compelling show. It’s got great characters, snappy dialogue, and a storyline that keeps you guessing until the very end. If you’re a fan of supernatural thrillers, this is the kind of episode that will make you want to binge-watch the entire season in one go.
