In this episode of The Magicians, titled "Home Improvement," our favorite group of magical misfits continue their quest to save magic from being destroyed. As always, the stakes are high, and the challenges they face are daunting.
At the start of the episode, we find Julia and Quentin deep in conversation. Julia is trying to convince Quentin that they need to focus on finding a new home for the magical creatures that are currently living in the library. Quentin is a bit hesitant, worried about how they will be able to find a suitable place for so many magical beings. But Julia is persistent, and she eventually convinces Quentin that they need to start looking for a new home.
Meanwhile, Alice and Kady are busy working on a plan to free Penny from the Library's control. They come up with an idea to use one of Alice's old memories to create a magical clone of herself. The clone will then be able to infiltrate the Library and set Penny free. It's a risky plan, but Alice is confident that they can pull it off.
As these two storylines unfold, we also see Margo and Eliot trying to come up with a way to restore the magical wellspring. They know that this is their only hope for saving magic, but they're not sure where to start. After some brainstorming, they come up with the idea to seek out the help of a magical creature called the Moon Mope. According to Margo, the Moon Mope has the ability to repair broken things, which makes it the perfect ally for their mission.
Especially compared to the rest of the season's rather intense themes, this episode seems like a bit of a breather in terms of plot development. Indeed, there is no bombastic overarching conflict or immediate threat being dealt with. Instead, much of the action is concerned with the characters' relationships with each other, and the quieter appreciation of the joys and comforts of home, wherever that may be. This is underscored by numerous character pairings: Alice and Kady awkwardly bonding; Julia and Quentin reconnecting through their shared concern for others; Margo and Eliot rekindling their identities as proud and boisterous monarchs; and Josh and Fish having some low-stakes but amusing adventures all their own. Although there are moments of suspense regarding Penny's rescue and the long-term fate of magic itself, this episode was much more introspective and emotional than some others. Fans of character development will find much to enjoy here, particularly as the episode draws to a close with a poignant, hopeful reunion.
Overall, this episode of The Magicians is a solid addition to the season. It further develops the characters that we've grown to love and gives us insight into their motivations and fears. The quieter moments in this episode allow us to see a different side of the magical world that we haven't seen before, and it's clear that the characters are starting to become more comfortable in their roles as protectors of magic. Ultimately, "Home Improvement" is a satisfying episode that sets the stage for even more magical adventures to come.
