The New Scooby Doo Mysteries was a show produced in the early and mid 1980s. It was at that time the sixth installment of the Scooby Doo series and had significant changes in the cast. It aired on ABC and was originally titled The All New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Mysteries. When Scrappy Doo was introduced to audiences in 1979, there was a strong surge in the ratings for Scooby Doo; this led the team to create a more Scrappy-focused show and change the original cast. The end result of these changes was the New Scooby Doo Mysteries. The show deals with mysteries encountered by Scooby Doo, Scrappy Doo, Shaggy and Daphne. Each episode runs thirty minutes but contains two separate segments which is a departure from previous Scooby shows. In this version, Daphne has taken the reigns as the team leader and she must help navigate a mystery with a diverse team. Scooby and Shaggy are their normal timid and often frightened selves, while Scrappy is a fireball looking for a fight. Balancing the team's approach, they all work together to solve mysteries they encounter as they travel the area. This particular version of Scooby Doo had several changes. The producers wanted a smaller team and a more balanced approach to mystery solving. Additionally, the writers wanted to show Daphne maturing into a leader and attempt to rid her of the damsel in distress perception she had earned in earlier series. Thus, Fred and Velma were cut from the regularly recurring cast and appeared infrequently as guests. While the show was short-lived, the production team was pleased with the new cast's impact and used a similar lineup when it debuted The Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby Doo a few years later.
