Homer gets fed up with the bank's outrageous fees and switches to the local credit union, which turns out to be a lot more friendly and helpful than any bank has ever been. However, Homer soon finds out that the credit union might not be able to provide the loans he needs to keep up with his extravagant lifestyle. Desperate for a loan, he goes against the advice of the credit union's manager and decides to let Marge's sisters borrow money from him. But when they never pay him back, Homer goes to extreme measures to get his money back, including staging a fake kidnapping and holding them for ransom.
Meanwhile, Lisa becomes obsessed with trying to find a way to escape the inevitable doom of the earth's destruction, as predicted by the Mayan calendar. She convinces her family to join her on a trip to the museum of natural history to learn more about the impending disaster, but ends up getting sidetracked by a display on women's history. In the end, Lisa learns to embrace her own history and the fact that every individual can make a difference in the world, even if it seems like the world is headed towards certain doom.
