In The Simpsons season 31 episode 4, the beloved Halloween tradition continues with the annual Treehouse of Horror episode. This year’s special, titled Treehouse of Horror XXX, features three spooky tales that pay tribute to classic horror films and creepy pop culture moments.
The first segment, “Intrusion of the Pod-Y Switchers,” is a twist on the 1956 sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers. When the Simpson family discovers that Springfield has been infiltrated by alien pod people who want to take over the town, they must band together to save their home. This segment features nods to other classic sci-fi movies, including The Thing and The Fly.
The second segment, “Multiplisa-ty,” is a riff on the horror film The Fly, as well as the real-life controversy surrounding the cloning of Dolly the sheep. When Bart manages to clone himself, he thinks it’s the coolest thing ever – until his clones start multiplying uncontrollably. This segment plays with the idea of identity and the consequences of playing god.
The final segment, “Geriatric Park,” is a hilarious take on the Jurassic Park franchise. When Springfield builds a theme park populated by genetically-engineered senior citizens – including Grampa Simpson – things go predictably wrong. Featuring references to the original Jurassic Park movie and The Walking Dead, “Geriatric Park” is a fun, over-the-top homage to the sci-fi/horror genre.
As always, Treehouse of Horror XXX also features a variety of fun, spooky references and gags throughout the episode. Fans can look forward to appearances by classic horror movie characters including Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Hitchcock, and Vincent Price. Plus, the town of Springfield gets in on the Halloween fun with a spooky version of the town square, complete with a giant pumpkin and cobweb-covered buildings.
Overall, The Simpsons season 31 episode 4 is a fun, entertaining addition to the Treehouse of Horror canon. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the series or just tuning in for the Halloween specials, there’s plenty to enjoy in this creepy, kooky episode.
