Todd Margaret is a British television series, created, written, and directed by David Cross. The show aired its first season on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom in 2009 and attracted a significant cult following. In the United States, the show was picked up by IFC (Independent Film Channel) in 2010 and aired for three seasons.
The show follows the misadventures of an American man named Todd Margaret, played by David Cross. Todd Margaret is an awkward, hapless, and socially inept office temp who is sent to London to promote a new energy drink. He has zero experience in marketing but is told that he is the perfect man for the job by his boss, Brent Wilts, played by Will Arnett. Todd Margaret meets his new boss, Dave, who is played by Blake Harrison, and his co-worker, Alice, played by Sharon Horgan. Todd Margaret is immediately attracted to Alice and tries to win her over.
The first episode of the show opens with Todd Margaret standing on the edge of a building, about to jump. It then cuts back to six months earlier, where Todd Margaret is living in his mother's basement in Portland, Oregon. His only friend is a guy named Dave, played by Spike Jonze, who tells Todd Margaret that he can get him a job selling energy drinks in London. Todd Margaret reluctantly agrees and heads to London for his new job.
Once in London, Todd Margaret quickly finds out that things are not as they seem. He is given a rundown hotel room that he shares with a strange man named Dave. The energy drink he is supposed to promote is called Thunder Muscle, and it is described as a drink that "turns you into a man." Todd Margaret is given a vague brief on what he is supposed to do and is sent to meet with a buyer who works at a major department store.
Things quickly start to go wrong, and Todd Margaret finds himself in a series of awkward, uncomfortable, and hilarious situations. He struggles to understand British slang, says inappropriate things to Alice, and gets drunk and ends up partying with a group of teenagers. He also manages to insult the British public and cause a major incident while promoting Thunder Muscle in a public square.
As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that Todd Margaret is in way over his head. He is completely out of his depth and has no idea what he is doing. His only option is to try and bluff his way through everything. He tells lie after lie, which only leads to more trouble. Todd Margaret is constantly digging himself into a deeper hole, as he tries to make it seem like he knows what he is doing.
The first episode of Todd Margaret sets the tone for the rest of the series. It is a dark, twisted, and hilarious comedy that is unlike anything else on television. David Cross is brilliant as Todd Margaret, and his performance perfectly captures the awkwardness and social ineptitude of the character. The supporting cast is also excellent, with Sharon Horgan and Blake Harrison providing great comedic moments.
Overall, Episode 1 of Todd Margaret is a great introduction to the series. It is a funny, chaotic, and unpredictable episode that sets up the premise of the show perfectly. The episode leaves you wanting more and sets the stage for the misadventures that are to come.
