Martin Bohm is a widower and a single father who takes care of his 11-year-old son Jake, who is autistic. Martin is trying to connect with Jake, but he is unable to understand his son's world. Jake is mute and has never spoken a word since his birth, but he is able to see patterns in everything around him. He communicates by writing numbers and complex patterns, which Martin tries to decipher.

In the second episode of Touch, Martin tries to figure out the meaning of Jake's latest pattern, which is the equation 1+1=3. Martin goes to the school and talks to Jake's teacher, who tells him that Jake had a fight with another student, but he doesn't explain why. Martin starts to worry about his son's behavior and tries to solve the equation.

Meanwhile, in Baghdad, Iraq, an Iraqi man named Naseem is trying to fix his daughter's hearing aid. Naseem is a laborer who has been working on a construction site in Baghdad. Because of the war, he and his family are living in a small house with no electricity, running water, or food. His daughter is deaf, and he is trying to fix her hearing aid so that she can hear the aircraft that drops food and water.

The episode flashes back to 9/11, when Martin's wife Sarah was working in the Twin Towers. Martin is watching the news coverage of the event, hoping that Sarah will survive. He finds a note from Sarah that says "Follow the numbers", and he starts to see patterns in the chaos around him. He becomes obsessed with finding the meaning behind the patterns.

Back in the present, Martin continues to try to solve the equation. He meets with an autistic girl named Amelia, who is able to understand Jake's patterns. Amelia tells Martin that the equation means that two parts can come together to create something greater than themselves. Martin realizes that the equation is a metaphor for his relationship with Jake. He and Jake are two separate parts, but they come together to create something greater than themselves.

Naseem is able to fix his daughter's hearing aid and she can finally hear the aircraft. He goes to the construction site and sees a group of children playing soccer with a ball made of rags. Naseem gives them his lunch and joins the game. When he returns home, he finds that the aircraft has dropped a food package for his family. He thanks God for the gift, but he also thanks Martin, who he doesn't know is responsible for the gift.

Martin finally understands Jake's message and tells him that he loves him. Jake responds by saying his first words in a long time: "I love you too, Dad". Martin is overjoyed and hugs his son. The episode ends with Martin realizing that he needs to follow the numbers in order to connect with his son. He understands that the patterns in Jake's world are a way for him to communicate. The episode captivates the audience with the beautiful storyline, powerful performances, and the subtle nuances of human emotions.
