Unplugged Nation is a reality television show that follows a family as they travel across America, touring three different remote properties. These locations offer no electricity or modern conveniences. After touring the three properties, the family chooses one and lives there for four days.

This four day trial period is designed to see if the family can handle living off the grid. This means they have to harvest their own food, raise their own livestock, and create their own power. During the trial, show host Jay Gruen teaches the family how to create a self sufficient lifestyle, living off of the land.

Once the trial has finished, the family must decide if they would like to give up their lives of modern comfort and convenience for off the grid lives on the frontier. If they decide to give up their modern lifestyles, they purchase their new unplugged home. If not, they return to their connected lives.
