Unspeakable is a gripping drama series that premiered on SundanceTV in 2019. Tackling the real-life emergence of HIV and hepatitis C in Canada during the 80s and 90s, the series follows the personal and political struggles faced by those affected by these diseases as they fought for their rights and sought justice.

At the center of the series is a young boy named Will (Spencer Drever), who is diagnosed with hemophilia, requiring him to receive regular blood transfusions. This treatment puts him and thousands of others at risk when contaminated blood products start circulating the healthcare system, ultimately leading to the spread of HIV and hepatitis C.

As Will's health deteriorates, his mother, Susan (Sarah Wayne Callies), becomes increasingly desperate to protect him and uncover the truth behind the tainted blood scandal. Meanwhile, local journalist Ben (Michael Shanks) investigates the story, and eventually partners with Susan to expose the ineptitude and corruption that allowed the crisis to unfold.

The show also explores the perspectives of others affected by the crisis, such as doctors and public health officials trying to contain the outbreak, and activists fighting the stigma and discrimination faced by those living with HIV. Shawn Doyle plays Dr. Bryce, a physician who initially dismisses concern about the contaminated blood, while Camille Sullivan portrays Alice, a public health official tasked with managing the crisis.

Levi Meaden and Trinity Likins star as Peter and Margaret, two young adults living with HIV who become engaged in activism and advocacy. Aaron Douglas portrays Will's doctor, who struggles with the ethical challenges of treating patients with HIV in a time of limited knowledge and resources. David Lewis, Brian Markinson, Paloma Kwiatkowski, and Diana Bang also play key supporting roles in the series.

Despite the difficult subject matter, Unspeakable strikes a balance between heart-wrenching emotion and compelling drama. The show's excellent ensemble cast brings nuance and depth to their characters, making it easy for viewers to empathize with their struggles. The writing is strong, capturing the complex political and social dynamics at play during the crisis, and the direction is skillful, creating a palpable sense of tension and urgency.

Overall, Unspeakable is a powerful and timely drama that sheds light on a dark chapter in Canada's history. It serves as both a reminder of the devastating consequences of public health crises and a testament to the resilience and bravery of those who fought for their rights and their lives.

Unspeakable is a series that ran for 17 seasons (228 episodes) between January 9, 2019 and on SundanceTV
