Katherine and Jason have always dreamed about owning a beach house in Malibu, California. They finally purchased a beautiful property that could potentially be converted into their ultimate vacation home. However, the property needs a lot of work, and they're not sure where to begin.
That's where contractor and designer Scott McGillivray comes in. In the second episode of Vacation House Rules, Scott meets with Katherine and Jason to discuss their goals and budget for their new beach house. The couple hopes to rent out the home for part of the year to help offset the cost of ownership, so Scott will need to design a space that's both functional and appealing to renters.
Scott starts by tackling the home's exterior. The property is situated on a steep hill, which makes access difficult and leaves the backyard feeling unfinished. Scott enlists the help of a landscaper and they begin working on terracing the backyard so that it can be used for entertaining and relaxing. Scott also installs a hot tub and an outdoor shower, which will be perfect for rinsing off after a day at the beach.
Inside, Scott's goal is to create a bright and airy space that's both comfortable and stylish. The main living area has beautiful views of the ocean, so Scott wants to make the most of that by incorporating large windows and a neutral color palette. He also installs new flooring and adds a modern fireplace, which brings a cozy feel to the space.
One of the biggest challenges of the renovation is working with the existing layout. The home has a small kitchen that's separate from the main living area, which doesn't make sense for entertaining guests. Scott decides to knock down a wall between the kitchen and living room, which creates an open-concept space that's perfect for socializing. He also installs new cabinets, countertops, and appliances to give the kitchen a fresh new look.
The bedrooms are also updated with new flooring, paint, and decor. Scott decides to go for a beachy theme that's both classic and modern. He incorporates natural materials like wood and woven textiles to give the bedrooms a relaxed, coastal feel.
Another major project is the bathrooms. The home has three bathrooms, but they all need to be updated. Scott decides to go for a spa-like feel by incorporating marble and other luxurious materials. He installs new vanities, showers, and toilets, which bring a modern and stylish touch to the bathrooms.
One of the key features of the home is a small balcony off of the main living area. Scott decides to transform this space into an outdoor dining area that's perfect for enjoying meals with friends and family. He installs a new table and chairs, as well as a barbecue grill and a heat lamp for chilly nights.
Throughout the renovation, Scott tries to make choices that will appeal to potential renters. He selects durable materials that can withstand heavy use, and he incorporates stylish yet functional pieces that will make guests feel at home.
After several weeks of hard work, Katherine and Jason are finally able to see their new Malibu beach house. They're impressed with the transformation, and they're excited to start using it as their vacation home. With its updated interiors, beautiful landscaping, and amazing ocean views, their beach house is sure to be a hit with renters and vacationers alike.
