In episode 7 of Vision of Escaflowne, titled Unexpected Partings, the story takes a dramatic turn as Hitomi is still struggling to come to terms with her newfound ability as a seer. She is unable to shake off the feeling of guilt and personally blames herself for defeating the last dragon, as she had seen its future death beforehand. Meanwhile, her beloved Van continues his mission to protect the innocent and to halt the expansion of the Zaibach Empire, which is accomplishing this by employing the use of automation and guerilla warfare tactics.

As Van and his companions travel on towards their next destination, Hitomi is visited by none other than Folken, Van's older brother and an exiled soldier now in league with the enemy Zaibach Empire. He tries to make her see the brighter aspects of her gift, explaining how seers have a positive impact on their world by using their knowledge to change negative futures and avert disaster. This encounter leaves Hitomi with many more questions than answers.

Meanwhile, both Van and Merle continue to compete for her attention as in a heated battle, when both knights defend against a sudden, brutal attack by two of the Empire's deadly Guymelefs. Hitomi becomes entranced by their fluid movements and strength, but the conflict brings more questions to her mind. What could be driving the Zaibach forces to do such appalling acts of violence? As the threat from the Zaibach Empire continues to grow, Van begins to realise that an old acquaintance, Allen Schezar, might be helping them. Allen Schezar, the wealthy knight who once tried to win Hitomi's affection, is now suspected of working hand in glove with the enemy.

In this climate of uncertainty, the show's main characters must confront their own desires and instincts to prevail against the growing darkness. Hitomi is wrestling with her feelings for both Van and Allen, as the tension between each of them seems to be approaching the tipping point. Van also must confront the grim reality that Zaibach has been taking crucial strategic details from his homeland, leading to the defeat of his father and the loss of his country. Finally, Allen's motives and connections to the enemy are questioned and brought to light.

The episode concludes with the group separating to pursue their own goals. Hitomi resolves to become more useful to Van and release her guilt of foreseeing negative futures. Van, travelling towards the capital city of Asturia without Hitomi’s help, is determined to take down the evil regime of the Zaibach Empire, while also confronting his own past traumas. Lastly, Allen resolves to address the lingering doubt surrounding his loyalty.

Overall, Unexpected Partings is a thrilling and gripping episode of Vision of Escaflowne. The bond between the three main characters keeps evolving and they continue to face new challenges and obstacles in their quest to stop the Zaibach Empire's tyranny. Hitomi's journey of self-discovery, Van's desire for vengeance and Allen's hidden motives all make for an engrossing and multi-layered story.
