Weird or What? is a documentary-style TV series that explores the unexplained and mysterious phenomena that often defy explanation. The show is hosted by William Shatner, who takes the viewer on a journey into the unknown, where they encounter strange events, unexplained occurrences, and mysteries that continue to baffle scientists and experts alike.

In season 1 episode 4 of Weird or What? titled Grim Reapers, the show explores the phenomenon of near-death experiences, where people claim to have come close to death and then returned to life with incredible tales of their experiences.

The episode begins by introducing the concept of the Grim Reaper, the personification of death, who is often depicted as a dark figure with a scythe, coming to claim the souls of the deceased. Shatner then presents several cases where people have reported encountering a similar figure during their near-death experiences.

The first story is that of Pam Reynolds, who underwent life-saving surgery to remove a giant aneurysm that was threatening her life. During the procedure, her heart was stopped, and her body temperature was lowered to near-freezing levels to reduce brain damage. Despite being clinically dead, Pam reported experiencing an out-of-body experience, where she saw her body on the operating table and heard the conversations of the doctors and nurses around her. She also reported encountering a figure that resembled the Grim Reaper, who tried to take her away. However, she fought back and returned to her body, making a full recovery, despite a 95% chance of brain damage.

The second story is that of George Rodonaia, a former neurosurgeon who suffered a severe head injury that left him in a coma for several days. During this time, he reported having an out-of-body experience, where he saw his own body and his frightened family members. He also claimed to encounter several beings, including a beautiful woman, who told him it wasn't his time and that he needed to return. Like Pam Reynolds, he eventually regained consciousness and made a miraculous recovery.

Another case presented in the episode is that of Dannion Brinkley, a former salesman who was struck by lightning and pronounced dead for 28 minutes. During this time, he reported having a near-death experience, where he encountered several beings, including a being of light, who showed him a vision of his future. He also claimed to have encountered the Grim Reaper, who he later described as a "dark mass of nothingness" that tried to pull him away.

The episode also delves into the scientific explanations behind near-death experiences, such as the release of endorphins, the lack of oxygen to the brain, and the activation of certain neural pathways. However, despite these explanations, many people still believe that there is something mysterious and unexplained about near-death experiences, and the show leaves it up to the viewer to decide what to believe.

Overall, Weird or What? season 1 episode 4 titled Grim Reapers is a fascinating exploration of near-death experiences and the mysterious figures that often appear during them. Through a mix of personal stories and scientific explanations, the episode leaves the viewer with a sense of wonder and mystery about the unknown forces that seem to govern our lives.
