As the title suggests, "Late Autumn Night's Dream" takes place during the autumn season in the world where humans are on the brink of extinction. The second episode further explores the world and the characters introduced in the first episode, diving deeper into their backstories and relationships with one another.
The episode begins with Willem and Chtholly going on a supply run to a nearby town. Along the way, they come across a group of fairies who are lost and afraid. One of the fairies, Nephren, is particularly scared and refuses to leave Chtholly's side. This encounter highlights the stark contrast between the powerful and immortal fairies and the fragile and mortal humans.
Back at the base, Willem and Chtholly are given a task to clear out a large, underground tunnel that has become infested with monsters. While on the mission, Chtholly has a dream about her past. The dream sequence is beautifully animated and provides insight into Chtholly's character, shedding light on why she is so drawn to Willem. We also learn more about the fairy's society and why they have chosen to live separately from the humans.
Meanwhile, back at the base, we see the other girls going about their daily lives. They are all struggling with their own personal demons and fears, but they try to remain optimistic and look out for one another. In a heartwarming scene, we see them all gathered around a campfire, telling stories and sharing memories from their past.
As the episode progresses, we see the characters slowly opening up to one another and forming deeper connections. However, there is an underlying sense of unease as we know that the world they live in is extremely dangerous and that their time together may be limited.
Overall, "Late Autumn Night's Dream" is a beautifully animated and emotionally charged episode. It does an excellent job of building upon the foundation established in the first episode and fleshing out the characters and world even further. The dream sequence is particularly striking and adds a depth to Chtholly's character that was previously missing. While the episode may be slow-paced for some, it is a necessary pause in the action that allows us to connect with the characters and empathize with their struggles.
