Why Did I Get Married is a movie about four married couples who have been friends since college. Each has achieved great success in their careers. The friends embark on a one week annual couples getaway to the mountains of Colorado for rest and relaxation. As part of the reunion, they talk together about marital issues and each asks the question of the other "Why did I get married?"
As the couples arrive at the retreat, it is apparent that all is not well in their relationships. They discuss infidelity, betrayal, forgiveness, and commitment. One couple's careers are taking precedence in the relationship, which leads to intense arguments and disagreements. One couple cannot stop arguing about the husband's previous relationship with an ex-spouse, and the constant alcohol abuse in the relationship. One couple battles with constant insults from the other about weight issues, and the infidelity of the husband. One couple struggles with coming to terms with the death of their only son and the guilt that they feel towards the situation.
As the days of the week long retreat progress, it is apparent that the marital issues each couple are experiencing, are more than just skin deep. One evening, the scope of their problems comes to a head during a meal at the dining room table. Each is informed of a secret about their spouse that they did not know further contributing to the known issues. They decide to discontinue with the retreat and hastily return home due to the magnitude of the secrets.
Upon returning home to their lives, the couples struggle to work out their problems. One couple decides on divorce while the others work out their issues through counseling and constant prayer.
