Ep 3. Sex, Death & Nudity

In the third episode of the hit British sitcom Coupling, entitled "Sex, Death & Nudity," the gang grapples with questions about mortality, intimacy, and nudity.

Things start off innocently enough, as Steve (played by Jack Davenport) tries to shake the awkwardness that's been plaguing his relationship with Susan (played by Sarah Alexander). In an attempt to reignite the spark, Steve suggests they have sex in a public place. Susan, understandably hesitant, suggests they compromise by going to a cemetery instead. Their awkward conversation is interrupted by Patrick (played by Ben Miles), who arrives wearing nothing but his birthday suit. As it turns out, he's just been to a nude beach, and he's feeling liberated and carefree.

Meanwhile, Sally (played by Kate Isitt) finds herself struggling with her own mortality after discovering a strange lump in her breast. Her fear and anxiety are compounded by the fact that her current boyfriend has a history of dating cancer survivors. She spends much of the episode grappling with the idea of death and the ways in which it might affect the people around her.

As the evening wears on, the gang gathers at Jeff's (played by Richard Coyle) apartment for a party. Jeff, never one to miss an opportunity to make things awkward, decides to host a game of 'Strip Poker for One.' Chaos ensues when Steve finds out that Susan has slept with Patrick in the past, leading to a series of comically disastrous encounters between the three of them.

Despite the heavy themes of the episode, "Sex, Death & Nudity" is classic Coupling - full of wit, humor, and razor-sharp dialogue. The show's ensemble cast is firing on all cylinders, with each character bringing their own unique blend of neuroses and quirks to the table.

Overall, "Sex, Death & Nudity" is a standout episode of a show that was consistently inventive, hilarious, and unafraid to tackle taboo subjects. Coupling is a must-watch for fans of whip-smart comedy that isn't afraid to push boundaries and take risks.
