Ep 5. Jane and the Truth Snake

Jane and the Truth Snake is the fifth episode of the second season of the British sitcom, Coupling. The show revolves around the love lives of six friends, three men and three women, who are all connected through different romantic relationships. The episode titled Jane and the Truth Snake is like any other episode of the show, filled with ridiculous and hilarious moments, misunderstandings, and relationship drama.

The episode begins with the men of the group (Steve, Patrick, and Jeff) hanging out in a bar, discussing how women always lie when they're in relationships. Jeff, in his usual way, brings up the topic of measuring penis size, and they all agree that women lie about that too. Jane, a member of the group's female side (along with Susan and Sally), overhears this conversation and challenges the men to a game of truth or dare. The men accept the challenge, but little do they know what they are really in for.

Jane brings along a giant rubber snake that she dubs the "Jane and the Truth Snake." The rules of the game are simple: you must tell the truth if the snake is placed on you, or you can't complete the dare. Sally decides to go first and is challenged to put her hand on Steve's thigh while maintaining eye contact for 15 seconds. She accepts the challenge but is apprehensive about the snake.

As the game progresses, the truths become more and more difficult to handle. The men start revealing things like how they felt up women on public transportation, and the women start revealing secrets about their sexual history. Things get especially awkward when Jeff asks Sally how many men she's slept with. Sally reveals that she's lost count and decides to take a shot to forget telling the truth. Jane finds this reaction unacceptable and decides to put Sally through another challenge. Sally then agrees to kiss Patrick on the lips, much to everyone's surprise.

While all of this is going on, Steve is feeling particularly insecure about his relationship with Susan. When Susan is left alone with the snake, she confesses that she's always considered Steve "average" in bed. Steve overhears this confession and decides to leave the game. He then goes on to make a drunken ass out of himself in a restaurant when he sees Susan talking to another man.

The episode ends with the group dispersing and no one quite sure about what they just experienced. The game exposed certain truths about each member of the group, but it also served to create new tensions amongst them.

Overall Jane and the Truth Snake is a classic example of the insanity that ensues when a group of friends gets together. It's a riotous episode filled with laughs and cringe-worthy moments. The cast of the show is at their best, bringing out the best in the characters’ personalities. Fans of the series will find no shortage of entertainment in this episode.
