The Americans is a classic spy story with a twist. Set in the 1980's Cold War period when Ronald Reagan was pressuring Russia to bring the Cold War to an end, the show is about two Soviet spies living near Washington DC. The two spies, Elizabeth Jennings played by Keri Russell, and Phillip Jennings, played by Matthew Rhys, are pretending to be two normal looking American suburbanites.

The story line has the couple, whose marriage was arranged by the KGB, interacting with a myriad of characters that can sometimes be dangerous and other times humorous as they go about their mission of gathering vital national security information. Throughout the interactions with the spies and informants under their control the couple has to balance the spy work they are sent to do while maintaining the suburbanite cover.

Maintaining the cover is made more difficult by the fact their next door neighbor is FBI Agent Stan Beeman, played by Noah Emmerich, who becomes suspicious of the two. His suspicion is thwarted by the lovely Nina (Annet Mahendru), who is the FBI agents mole in the KGB but also works for the Jennings.

Maintaining the married couple cover is helped with the addition of two children, 14 year old "Paige" (Holly Taylor) and 11-year-old "Henry" (Keidrich Sellati), neither of whom suspect their parents are foreign spies. The interaction between the Jennings as a couple and parents is a blossoming love story in it's own right. Facing the perils of their job together creates a close bond as does facing the challenges of raising a teenage daughter and young son.
