WWE Extreme Rules is an annual pay per view event held by World Wrestling Entertainment. The origins of Extreme Rules date back to the attitude era of professional wrestling. Extreme Championship Wrestling was a group that specialized in a hard core style of wrestling that incorporated a variety of dangerous weapons, crazy stipulations, and fearless professional daredevil style wrestlers. ECW was an extreme alternative to the family friendly WWE. In later years, WWE would acquire the ECW name and run a series of events dedicated to the history of ECW. These events would use the hard core style and tell the history of ECW.

After a few events, WWE chose to re-package their ECW themed pay per view and created a whole new event called Extreme Rules. The first Extreme Rules show was in 2009. During that event all of the matches had special stipulations that allowed use of weapons and matches with no rules against outside interference. The main event of that first show was a battle for the WWE championship between Jeff Hardy and Edge in a ladder match. The championship belt was placed from a line above the ring. Hardy and Edge had to battle to climb a ladder and pull down the belt in order to win the match.

In 2012 the Extreme Rules event was held at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. That night Randy Orton had a falls count anywhere match with Kane. Dolph Ziggler battled Brodus Clay. Cody Rhodes challenged The Big Show for the Intercontinental Championship in a tables match. WWE's newest sensation Ryback fought both Aaron Relic and Jay Hatton in a handicap match. The World Champion Sheamus defended his title against Daniel Bryan in a two out of three falls match. Nikki Bella, the Divas Champion, defended her championship belt against Layla. Chicago native, CM Punk, put his WWE Championship on the line against Chris Jericho in a Chicago Street Fight. The main event of the night saw WWE Superstar, John Cena go head to head against returning WWE Legend and former Ultimate Fighting Champion, Brock Lesner in an Extreme Rules Match.

WWE Extreme Rules is the one event on the calendar each year where truly anything can happen.
